Trigger point pain from Splenius Capitis Trigger Point #One and how to find relief

STEP 1: How to Locate the Splenius Capitis Trigger Point #One

The Splenius Capitis is a muscle that connects the skull to the neck. It arises from the first few thoracic vertebrae and attaches to the back of the skull just under your ear lobe. When both muscles are acting together, they help extend the neck or lift the head. Unilaterally, it also helps in bending the neck to either side, effectively turning the head. Strain on this muscle characteristically causes headaches on top of your head. If you’ve been getting a lot of headaches in that area, this muscle is probably the culprit.

STEP 2: How to Self-Release the Splenius Capitis Trigger Point # One

There are two ways to massage the Splenius Capitis. The first method requires only your hands. First, locate the muscle as shown in the previous video and move your head up and down, feeling for the junction between the skull and spine. The upper trigger point is located about two to three finger widths below and slightly outside the center line. If you have pain over the right TrP, for instance, use the fingers of your left hand and press over the area for 30 seconds and release. The second way of massaging the Splenius Capitis muscle requires using a ball and a pillow. Lie with your head resting on the pillow, then locate the Splenius Capitis that corresponds to your trigger point. As before, place the ball over the area behind your neck. This placement helps orient your head towards the pain, thereby allowing the ball access to the whole muscle and offering better relief. Should you require increased pressure, rest both hands behind your neck and release your head downward. Hold for 30 seconds and release. Because the neck has many important structures running through it, it is important to stop stretching immediately upon feeling any abnormal pain or discomfort unrelated to your muscle-catch. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SELF-MASSAGE should you have any misgivings.

STEP 3: How to Stretch the Splenius CapitisTrigger Point # One

Stretching the Splenius Capitis is quite simple. We learned that this muscle helps in lifting the head and turning it to either side. To explain, the right-side muscle contracts when you turn your head to the right, and vice versa. To stretch it, we’ll be doing the opposite actions. This stretch can be done either sitting or standing. Place your left hand over your head and gently tuck your chin into your chest as much as possible. Hold for 30 seconds to a minute and release, remembering to stretch the other side afterward.
